A first day at a new job is often full of anticipation and questions. You suddenly find yourself in a whole new world, wondering who your colleagues and supervisors will be, and how that first day will unfold. These questions, though completely natural, mark the beginning of a great adventure!
At Roy., we understand how important it is to give our new recruits a positive, welcoming and well-guided onboarding experience, starting even before their first day of work.
To better understand our approach, we spoke with Patrick Gingras, a 13-year veteran at Roy. who currently serves as contract supervisor at Concordia.

Welcome and training at Campus Roy.
The initial welcome for our new talent takes place at Campus Roy., a space 100% dedicated to onboarding and training our recruits. This is where recruits sign their contract (🎉) and complete paid training on the fundamentals of the commercial janitorial attendant role. Our goal is to prepare them effectively for their new position, ensuring their autonomy and well-being right from the start of their career at Roy.
During this welcome and training day, our new recruits also receive their uniform and all the relevant information to start their first day off on the right foot.
"Every detail is carefully planned to ensure a successful first day of work. New employees receive the workplace address, their schedule and their team lead's contact information in advance. All they need to do is show up on time at the location indicated to meet their supervisor."
Meeting the team
As soon as they arrive, new employees are warmly welcomed by their team lead. This person plays a key role in introducing them to their work environment and to the rest of the team.
"I have very fond memories of the warm welcome I received when I first joined Roy. I was told how important it is to find little moments of enjoyment in your work. That's a lesson I try to pass on to my new employees, 13 years later. This approach helps lighten the mood in those first few days and reduce the stress that naturally comes with any new beginning. I'm convinced you can absolutely do your job seriously and efficiently while still having a good time with your colleagues. This first welcome day is the perfect moment to share that message."
Pairing with a mentor colleague
Every new employee is then paired with a mentor colleague, specially chosen to pass on the key skills needed to carry out their work route and to guide them through the first few weeks of onboarding. This mentor is also available to answer questions and ease any concerns.
Having gone through this onboarding journey themselves, mentors are ideally placed to make their new colleagues' transition into the role as smooth as possible!
"It's truly reassuring for a new employee to have a mentor's support during their first days on the job. Having access to someone like that creates a special connection that fosters a sense of security and belonging right from the start of their journey at Roy."
Discovering the workplace and responsibilities
On their first day, employees mainly take on an observer role, accompanying their mentor as they carry out their work route. Mentors take the time to gradually introduce them to work methods, the proper use of tools and cleaning products, and the cleanliness standards expected.
This approach allows new recruits to gradually immerse themselves in their role so they can become independent and efficient in completing their tasks.
"Generally speaking, new employees reach a certain level of independence by their third shift. That said, they're never left on their own. Tools like reference sheets and a printed work plan are provided to help ease the transition. On top of that, the mentor and team lead remain constantly available to answer any questions. This ensures our new employees get the support they need to do their job well."
A tip from Patrick for succeeding at Roy.
Now that we've covered the first steps at Roy., let's see what advice Patrick has to offer for succeeding within the company.
"I advise all new recruits to show up on time, pay close attention to instructions and show real commitment to doing their tasks well. It may sound obvious, but in my opinion, that's exactly what sets apart the top performers who grow and move forward at Roy.
It's also important to take care of yourself, eat well and get enough sleep. The commercial janitorial attendant role and night shifts can be demanding. By following this advice, I'm confident you'll find your place and succeed at Roy. Welcome to the team!"
