What does it mean to be a commercial cleaner?
If anyone still had doubts about the importance of commercial cleaning in our society, the pandemic certainly confirmed just how essential this job is. Whether through surface disinfection, sanitizing public spaces, or indoor air quality, cleaning has been one of the government's key weapons in fighting the spread of the virus.
Today, the importance of this trade can't be questioned. But what does it actually involve? The basics of the job are fairly straightforward: keeping public spaces clean. These spaces — whether office towers, schools, or hospitals — are used daily by thousands of people in close contact with one another.
So there's a large number of places to clean, but the type of cleaning work can vary depending on the building. We often talk about light-duty or heavy-duty work to describe the level of cleaning required. Let's take a closer look at some examples of tasks performed by a cleaner.
The usual tasks of a cleaner
To help maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of public spaces under contract, a variety of tasks can be assigned to our different cleaning teams. Here are a few examples :
- ✓
Regular floor cleaning to remove accumulated dust;
- ✓
Stripping, waxing, and polishing floors to keep them looking great and extend their lifespan;
- ✓
Steam cleaning carpets to get rid of bacteria and dust mites;
- ✓
Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces (including bathrooms) to keep spaces healthy for visitors;
- ✓
Emptying trash and recycling bins;
- ✓
And so much more!
Safe to say there's plenty to keep you busy throughout a shift, and responsibilities can vary a lot depending on the building and your route!
What it takes to be a good cleaner
To stand out as a cleaner at Roy., you first and foremost need to be thorough, reliable, and take pride in a job well done. We also recommend being in good physical shape, since the tasks performed during a shift are very physical and require a lot of effort. Handy, right? You won't need to go to the gym to stay fit anymore 😉.
Unsurprisingly, a cleaner shouldn't be squeamish about cleaning dirty environments, since that will certainly be part of the job.
More specifically at Roy., we look for these 3 qualities in our people :
- ✓
Being in good physical shape : the job is physical and calls for people who like to move!
- ✓
Being flexible : the more flexible and available you are, the more opportunities you'll have to take on a variety of contracts. Our work is mostly done in the evening or at night.
- ✓
Being caring : this is essential to being part of the team. At Roy., everyone looks out for one another, and we truly care about each other's well-being.
What does a cleaner's day-to-day life look like?
Cleaning work is organized into shifts. The day is often split into three parts : the day shift, the evening shift, and the night shift. Each cleaner is assigned to a team to carry out work at a specific location according to a set schedule. From there, they have the autonomy needed to complete the required tasks during their shift. The environment is generally calm, and the buildings are prestigious.
There's also teamwork organized for special projects. Take summer at schools, for example. With students on vacation, bigger cleaning jobs can be tackled. These special projects usually require the supervision of a leader with the field experience needed to manage them. So there are plenty of opportunities for cleaners who want to add some variety to their daily routine.
